Description
Affectionately known as both the ‘Semi Bubbleback’ and the ‘Ovettone’, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 6084 from 1952 occupies a unique position in Rolex history. Produced during the transitional period between the iconic Bubbleback generation and the slimmer Oyster Perpetuals that followed, it combines the generous, rounded proportions of the early automatic Rolex with the cleaner, more modern lines that would come to define the range in the decades ahead. It is, in the truest sense, the best of both worlds.
The original black gilt dial is the centrepiece — and what a dial it is. Decades of tropical aging have brought extraordinary depth and warmth to the surface, the gilt printing glowing against the dark background in a way that no modern watch can replicate. Applied gold hour markers and a large Rolex coronet at 12 o’clock complete a balanced, classical layout.
The stainless steel Oyster case houses one of the rarest surviving features on any ref. 6084 — the original ‘Super Oyster’ crown. This briefly produced Rolex innovation was designed to click securely into place without screwing down, and was replaced on the vast majority of examples during subsequent services. Its presence here is an immediate and significant point of authenticity for serious collectors.
Fitted with a generic beads-of-rice bracelet, the watch wears with the easy, mid-century character that has made this reference a firm favourite among vintage Rolex enthusiasts worldwide.
