Description
Among the most coveted vintage Omegas in circulation, the Constellation Pie Pan (ref. 14902-62) from 1962 represents the collection at its absolute peak — technically, aesthetically, and historically. Introduced in 1952 as Omega’s flagship chronometer line, the Constellation quickly became the benchmark for precision in Swiss watchmaking, and the ref. 14902 with its iconic pie pan dial is the version collectors seek out above all others.
The black gilt dial is the centrepiece. Glossy, deep, and warmly patinated with age, it carries applied gold hour markers and Dauphine hands that catch the light against the dark background with a contrast that feels almost jewellery-like. The stepped edges of the pie pan construction add an architectural dimension rarely seen in dress watches of any era. The overall effect is one of quiet drama — restrained and refined, yet impossible to overlook.
The 34mm stainless steel case is in the classic Constellation configuration: dog-leg lugs, a screw-in caseback engraved with the Observatory medallion signifying its chronometer certification, and the original octagonal crown. The combination of proportions and detail is a masterclass in early 1960s Swiss design.
Inside beats the Omega calibre 561 — a certified chronometer-grade automatic. Part of Omega’s celebrated 55x/56x family, it was produced from 1958 to 1967 and remains one of the most accurate and reliable vintage movements available to collectors today.
Over sixty years on, the Pie Pan Constellation in black gilt remains one of the most beautiful and historically significant dress watches ever made.
